In this lighter the glass container in which hydrogen is produced has a different shape from that in the 1ME model. A double glass vessel with a lid is mounted on a box of walnut wood. The inner vessel contains a zinc bar; this reacts with dilute acid, producing hydrogen which rises to the tap on the lid. The base of the instrument contains an electrophorus, consisting of a pewter plate resting on a piece of resin that can be extracted and charged by rubbing it with fur. When the tap is opened the gas comes out of the nozzle, and at the same time the electrophorus plate is raised and touches a brass electrode. A spark jumps between the points in front of the glass container, igniting the gas. This in turn lights a small candle in a holder.
